C1 English Grammar – Adjectives and Adverbs – Ex 92
At C1 level, you must use adjectives and adverbs with precision—choosing the right form, position, and degree. Mistakes here (e.g., “real good” vs. “really good”) undermine credibility in academic and professional settings.
The Core Difference
Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns.
✅ “She is a careful driver.” (describes “driver”)
Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or whole sentences.
✅ “She drives carefully.” (describes “drives”)
C1-Level Usage Challenges
1. Flat Adverbs (no -ly)
Some adverbs have the same form as the adjective. These are common in American English but often judged in formal writing.
- ✅ “Drive slow.” (flat adverb – acceptable in speech)
- ✅ “Drive slowly.” (standard adverb – preferred in writing)
- ⚠️ Avoid flat adverbs like “real good” → use “really good”
2. Position Matters
- Adjectives usually come before the noun or after linking verbs (be, seem, become):
“a brilliant idea” / “The idea is brilliant.”
- Adverbs are flexible but often follow the verb or come at the end:
“She argued brilliantly.” / “Brilliantly, she solved the problem.”
3. Gradable vs. Non-Gradable
- Gradable (can use “very,” “quite,” “extremely”):
“very happy,” “extremely quickly”
- Non-gradable (use “absolutely,” “completely,” not “very”):
“absolutely exhausted” (not “very exhausted”),
“completely wrong” (not “very wrong”)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- “Real” vs. “Really”: ❌ “That’s real nice.” → ✅ “That’s really nice.”
- “Bad” vs. “Badly”: “I feel bad” (adjective after linking verb) vs. “I performed badly” (adverb modifying verb)
- Double -ly: ❌ “He spoke very quicklyly.” → ✅ “He spoke very quickly.”
- Adjective after action verb: ❌ “She sings beautiful.” → ✅ “She sings beautifully.”
