C1 English Grammar – Conditionals – Ex 51
Conditionals express real and unreal situations—past, present, and future. At C1 level, you must use all types accurately, including subtle mixed forms. This lesson explains when and how to use each type in academic, professional, and conversational English.
What Are Conditionals?
Conditionals are sentences with an “if” clause (the condition) and a main clause (the result). They show what happens, will happen, or would have happened if something else occurs or occurred.
The Five Conditional Types
- Zero Conditional: General truths — “If you heat ice, it melts.” (present + present)
- First Conditional: Real future possibility — “If it rains, we will cancel the picnic.” (present + will)
- Second Conditional: Unreal present/future — “If I won the lottery, I would travel.” (past simple + would)
- Third Conditional: Unreal past — “If she had studied, she would have passed.” (past perfect + would have + past participle)
- Mixed Conditionals: Unreal past condition → present result, or vice versa — “If I had practiced, I would be better now.”
Common C1-Level Errors
- Using “would” in the if clause: ❌ “If I would have known…” → ✅ “If I had known…”
- Confusing Second and Third: “If I would go” → should be “If I went”
- Overusing “if” when “unless” is clearer: “Unless you study, you’ll fail” = “If you don’t study, you’ll fail.”
- Using “was” instead of “were” in formal Second Conditional: “If I were you…” (not “was”)
Conditional Types:
Zero
First
Second
Third
Mixed
correct “If I had known, I would have helped.”
incorrect “If I would have known, I would have helped.” — never use “would” in the if clause
