C1 English Grammar – Contrasting Ideas – Ex 19
At C1 level, you must express contrasts precisely using a range of conjunctions and prepositions like although, despite, whereas, and while. Choosing the right connector affects tone, formality, and clarity—especially in academic and professional writing.
What Are Contrast Connectors?
Contrast connectors show that two ideas are different, unexpected, or surprising. They help you compare, qualify, or highlight exceptions.
Examples:
- “Although it rained, the event continued.” (unexpected result)
- “She loves hiking; whereas her brother prefers museums.” (direct comparison)
- “Despite his experience, he didn’t get the job.” (surprising outcome)
C1-Level Contrast Structures
1. Subordinating Conjunctions (followed by subject + verb)
- Although / Even though / Though:
✅ “Although she studied hard, she failed.”
- While / Whereas (for direct comparison):
✅ “Whereas I enjoy classical music, he prefers jazz.”
2. Prepositional Phrases (followed by noun / -ing)
- Despite / In spite of + noun or -ing:
✅ “Despite the rain, we went out.”
✅ “In spite of feeling tired, she finished the race.”
3. Conjunctive Adverbs (with semicolon or new sentence)
- However / Nevertheless / Nonetheless:
✅ “He trained every day; however, he didn’t win.”
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- “Despite” + subject + verb: ❌ “Despite she was tired...” → ✅ “Despite her tiredness...” or “Although she was tired...”
- Confusing “while” and “whereas”: Use “whereas” for clear contrast; “while” can mean “at the same time” (ambiguous).
- Using “but” after “although”: ❌ “Although it was cold, but we swam.” → ✅ Remove “but.”
- Comma splices with “however”: ❌ “It was expensive, however we bought it.” → ✅ Use a semicolon or period.
Contrast Connector Types:
Although / Even though
Despite / In spite of
Whereas / While
However / Nevertheless
correct “Despite the noise, she concentrated.”
incorrect “Despite she was noisy...” — “despite” must be followed by a noun or -ing, not a clause
