C1 English Grammar – Nouns – Ex 14
Nouns name people, places, things, and ideas. At C1 level, you must handle advanced distinctions: countable vs. uncountable usage, collective agreement, compound formation, abstract reference, and precise plural forms. Mistakes here sound unprofessional.
What Are Nouns?
Nouns are naming words. They can be concrete (table, dog) or abstract (freedom, justice). At C1, you must choose the correct noun form, number, and usage in formal and academic contexts.
Key Noun Types at C1 Level
- Countable vs. Uncountable: “advice” (uncountable), “suggestions” (countable)
- Collective Nouns: team, family, committee — in American English, these take singular verbs
- Compound Nouns: toothpaste, mother-in-law, editor-in-chief — plural usually on first word: “passers-by”
- Abstract Nouns: happiness, evidence, research — often uncountable and used without articles
- Irregular Plurals: child → children, phenomenon → phenomena, criterion → criteria
- Gender-Neutral Forms: chairperson (not chairman), firefighter (not fireman)
Common C1-Level Errors
- Wrong quantifiers: “many advice” → should be “much advice” or “many pieces of advice”
- Incorrect plurals: “two criterions” → correct: “two criteria”
- Article misuse: “He gave me an information” → should be “He gave me information”
- Collective noun agreement: In American English: “The team is winning” (not “are”)
- Compound plural errors: “sisters-in-laws” → correct: “sisters-in-law”
