C1 English Grammar – Unreal Situations – Ex 27
Unreal situations describe things that are imaginary, unlikely, or impossible. At C1 level, you must use precise verb forms (would, past subjunctive, perfect modals) to discuss hypothetical scenarios clearly in academic, professional, and creative contexts.
What Are Unreal Situations?
Unreal (or hypothetical) situations are not true, not happening, or no longer possible. We use special verb forms to show this:
- Present/future unreal: “If I won the lottery, I would travel.”
- Past unreal: “If I had studied, I would have passed.”
- Mixed time: “If I had taken that job, I would be richer now.”
These structures signal that the speaker knows the situation is imaginary.
C1-Level Structures for Unreal Situations
1. Second Conditional (Unreal Present/Future)
If + past simple, would + base verb
- ✅ “If she knew the answer, she would tell us.”
- ✅ “If I were you, I’d apologize.” (Use “were” for all subjects in formal English)
2. Third Conditional (Unreal Past)
If + past perfect, would have + past participle
- ✅ “If they had left earlier, they would have caught the train.”
- ✅ “I would have helped if I had known.”
3. Mixed Conditionals
Past condition → present result, or present condition → past result
- ✅ “If I had taken that job, I would be richer now.” (past → present)
- ✅ “If I were more organized, I would have finished yesterday.” (present → past)
4. Modal Perfects for Regret/Criticism
- “You should have told me!” (regret)
- “He could have won if he’d tried.” (lost opportunity)
- “She must have been exhausted.” (logical conclusion about the past)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using “would” in the if clause: ❌ “If I would have known...” → ✅ “If I had known...”
- Confusing “was” and “were”: In formal unreal conditionals, use “were” for all subjects: “If I were...”
- Overusing third conditional for general truths: Use second conditional for habits or general unreal situations.
- Missing “have” in perfect modals: ❌ “I would told you” → ✅ “I would have told you.”
