What are Question Words?
Question words (also called WH-words) are used to ask for specific information in English. They help you form questions that require more than a yes/no answer.
Why are Question Words Important?
- They help you get detailed information in conversations
- They are essential for A2 level communication
- They appear in everyday questions about people, places, things, time, and quantities
- Knowing the right question word helps you ask natural, correct questions
Question Words You'll Practice:
- Who: asks about a person (subject or object)
- What: asks about things, actions, or information (general)
- Which: asks about a choice between known options
- Where: asks about place or location
- When: asks about time
- Why: asks about reason or purpose
- How: asks about manner, condition, or method
- How much: asks about uncountable quantities (money, time, weight, etc.)
- How many: asks about countable quantities (number of items)
Key Difference: What vs Which
- What = general question — no choices given: → “What is your favorite color?” (any color possible)
- Which = specific choice — options are known or implied: → “Which color do you like — red or blue?” (only two choices)
Important Tips:
- Who = person: Who is your teacher?
- What = thing or action: What is your name?
- Which = choice: Which book is yours?
- Where = place: Where is the library?
- When = time: When does the class start?
- Why = reason: Why are you late?
- How = manner: How do you make coffee?
- How much = uncountable: How much water do you drink?
- How many = countable: How many apples are there?
Grammar Rule Reminder:
- Never ask: “Why is the problem?” → incomplete! ✅ Say: “What is there a problem?”
- Don’t ask: “What is your favorite color?” if you have two or more colors to choose from → use “Which!”
