Expressing your thoughts, likes, and emotions clearly and politely is essential for real communication. At B1 level, you must give opinions with reasons, agree or disagree respectfully, express preferences accurately, describe feelings precisely, and use hedging language to sound polite and less direct.
Giving Opinions
- Neutral: I think… / I believe… / In my opinion…
- Strong: I’m sure that… / I’m convinced that… / There’s no doubt that…
- Always add a reason: I think remote work is better because it saves time.
Agreeing and Disagreeing Politely
- Agreeing: I agree. / I totally agree. / That’s exactly how I see it.
- Disagreeing politely: I’m not so sure about that. / I see your point, but… / That’s an interesting idea, but…
- Key tip: Always acknowledge the other person before disagreeing.
Preferences, Feelings & Hedging
Preferences:
I prefer tea to coffee.
I’d rather stay home.
Emotions:
I’m excited about the trip.
She’s angry with him.
Hedging (softening):
Kind of tired.
Maybe we could try…
I suppose that’s true.
Avoid:
“You’re wrong.” → “I see your point, but…”
