Chapter 15 - B1 English Grammar – Narrative and Storytelling: Past Events with Detail – Ex 15
Telling stories clearly and vividly is a key B1 skill. You must structure narratives with a beginning, middle, and end; use time markers to sequence events; add sensory and emotional details; combine past tenses accurately; and vary sentence length to keep listeners engaged.
The Three-Part Story
- Beginning (orientation): Who? Where? When?
“Last Saturday, I decided to go hiking alone.”
- Middle (complication): What went wrong?
“I got lost. My phone had no signal.”
- End (resolution): How did it finish? How did you feel?
“I saw a ranger’s truck and asked for help. I was soaked but safe.”
Time Markers and Past Tenses
- Sequence: First, Then, After that, Finally
- Drama: Suddenly, All of a sudden, Just then
- Past Simple: completed actions
I got lost.
- Past Continuous: background actions
I was walking when it started to rain.
- Past Perfect: actions before the main story time
I had forgotten my map.
Adding Life to Your Story
Sensory details:
I could hear thunder.
It smelled like rain.
Emotions:
I was terrified.
My heart was racing.
Sentence variety:
Short: Then I heard it.
Long: While I was trying to call for help, my phone died.
Avoid monotony:
Don’t repeat “and then… and then…”—use time markers and varied structures.
