Listening to spoken English requires strategy, not just vocabulary. At B1 level, you must identify main ideas vs. details, recognize signposting language, understand natural speech (like contractions and linking), take smart notes with abbreviations, and predict content to stay engaged and comprehend effectively.
When you hear these, listen carefully—important information follows.
good note “Workshop Sat @11 → e-books, audiobooks”
poor note “There is a workshop on Saturday at eleven o’clock about digital books and audio books.”
Read this transcript of a library announcement. Notice signposts, natural speech, and structure.
Hi everyone! Welcome to the Greenfield Public Library.
First of all, thank you for being here. We’re excited to share some updates with you today.
The main news is this: starting next Monday, we’re extending our hours. We’ll now be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday—that’s two hours later than before!
In addition, we’ve just added fifty new laptops for public use. You can sign them out at the front desk for up to three hours.
Now, you might be wondering: do I need a special pass? Actually, no—just your library card.
On the other hand, our children’s story time will be moved to the afternoon. It now starts at 2 p.m. instead of 10 a.m.
Finally, don’t forget our free digital workshop this Saturday at 11. We’ll show you how to access e-books, audiobooks, and online courses—all from home.
So to sum up: longer hours, more laptops, story time in the afternoon, and a workshop this weekend. We hope to see you soon!
