Now that you’ve covered all B1 grammar and communication skills, it’s time to review, assess your progress, and apply your knowledge in real-world tasks. This chapter helps you reflect on your growth, identify strengths and gaps, and prepare confidently for B2 and beyond.
Be honest—note what you can do well and what needs practice.
B1 success “I can handle most situations in English.”
Next goal “I can express nuance, abstraction, and complex ideas.”
Read Diego’s reflection on his English journey. Notice how he connects grammar to real communication.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
Six months ago, I couldn’t form a question without panicking. I’d mix up “Did you went?” and freeze when someone asked me a Wh- question.
Now, I can order food, ask for directions, and even give my opinion in meetings. I use Past Simple to tell stories about my weekend, Present Perfect to talk about my travel experiences (“I’ve been to five countries!”), and conditionals to imagine possibilities (“If I get this job, I’ll move to Lisbon”).
I’ve learned that phrasal verbs are everywhere—pick up, turn down, look into—and that articles matter more than I thought (“I went to hospital” vs. “I went to the hospital”).
Most importantly, I don’t stay silent when I don’t know a word. I paraphrase: “the thing you use to open bottles” instead of “bottle opener.” And I ask for clarification: “Could you say that again more slowly?”
I still make mistakes—like using “will” in if-clauses (oops!). But now I notice them, correct myself, and keep going.
That’s real progress.
