Chapter 2 - B1 English Grammar – Past Tenses: Clear and Accurate Use – Ex 2
At B1 level, you must accurately use Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, and Past Perfect Continuous to describe completed actions, interrupted events, sequences, and durations in the past. This lesson clarifies when to use each tense and how to avoid common errors with time expressions and verb forms.
The Four Past Tenses
- Past Simple: completed actions at a specific time (I watched a movie last night.)
- Past Continuous: actions in progress at a past moment, often interrupted (I was cooking when the phone rang.)
- Past Perfect: an action completed before another past action (When I arrived, the train had left.)
- Past Perfect Continuous: duration of an action before another past moment (She had been waiting for an hour when he finally came.)
Key tip: Time connectors like when, while, before, after, by the time help show sequence.
Frequent B1 Errors to Avoid
- ❌ I was knowing the answer. → ✅ I knew the answer. (Stative verbs don’t use continuous tenses)
- ❌ When I had arrived, the movie started. → ✅ When I had arrived, the movie had already started. (Sequence must be clear)
- ❌ She was worked all day. → ✅ She had been working all day. (Past Perfect Continuous requires “been + -ing”)
- ❌ They played while I watched TV. → ✅ They were playing while I was watching TV. (Two simultaneous actions → both continuous)
