Chapter 4 - B1 English Grammar – Questions: Form and Function – Ex 4
At B1 level, you must form and understand different types of questions accurately—Yes/No, Wh-, negative, tag, and indirect questions. This lesson covers word order, auxiliary verbs, polite forms, and short answers to help you ask and respond naturally in conversations and formal settings.
The Five Question Types
- Yes/No Questions: Start with auxiliary verb (Do you like coffee? Can she swim?)
- Wh- Questions: Start with question word (What time is it? Where do you live?)
- Negative Questions: Express surprise or check understanding (Don’t you like it?)
- Question Tags: Short questions at the end of statements (You like tea, don’t you?)
- Indirect Questions: Polite/formal forms (Could you tell me where the bank is?)
Key tip: In questions, the word order is auxiliary + subject + verb—never statement order.
Frequent B1 Errors to Avoid
- ❌ Likes you pizza? → ✅ Do you like pizza? (Wrong word order)
- ❌ Where is the station? in indirect questions → ✅ Could you tell me where the station is? (No inversion in indirect part)
- ❌ You do like coffee, do you? → ✅ You like coffee, don’t you? (Tag must match tense and be opposite)
- ❌ Who did call you? → ✅ Who called you? (No auxiliary with “who” as subject)
Essential Rules
Yes/No & Wh-:
