Chapter 7 - B1 English Grammar – Conditionals: Real, Hypothetical, and Unreal Situations – Ex 7
Conditionals let you talk about possibilities, conditions, and imaginary scenarios. At B1 level, you must use Zero, First, Second, Third, and Mixed Conditionals accurately to express general truths, real future possibilities, unreal present/future situations, unreal past events, and past actions with present results.
The Five Conditional Types
- Zero: General truths → If + Present, Present
- First: Real future possibilities → If + Present, will + base verb
- Second: Unreal present/future → If + Past Simple, would + base verb
- Third: Unreal past → If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle
- Mixed: Past action → present result → If + Past Perfect, would + base verb
Key tip: Never use will or would in the if-clause (except in polite requests like If you would wait…).
