Chapter 7 - B1 English Grammar – Conditionals: Real, Hypothetical, and Unreal Situations – Ex 7

Conditionals let you talk about possibilities, conditions, and imaginary scenarios. At B1 level, you must use Zero, First, Second, Third, and Mixed Conditionals accurately to express general truths, real future possibilities, unreal present/future situations, unreal past events, and past actions with present results.

The Five Conditional Types

Key tip: Never use will or would in the if-clause (except in polite requests like If you would wait…).

Usage Guide

Zero:
Facts, science, habits
If you heat ice, it melts.
First:
Real future plans
If she calls, I’ll answer.
Second:
Wishes, advice, dreams
If I had money, I’d travel.
Third:
Regrets, past criticism
If he had practiced, he would have won.

What Each Conditional Expresses:

Facts → Zero
Real Future → First
Unreal Now → Second
Unreal Past → Third
Past→Present → Mixed

correct “If I had studied, I would have passed.”
incorrect “If I would have studied, I would pass.”
