Articles (a, an, the) and noun usage (countable/uncountable) are essential for sounding natural in English. At B1 level, you must choose the correct article, handle uncountable nouns, and apply rules for geographical names, meals, and general vs. specific references.
When to Use Each Article
- A / An: singular, countable, new or general noun
I saw a cat. She’s an engineer.
- The: specific or already mentioned noun
The cat was black. The engineer is my sister.
- Zero article (∅): plural/uncountable nouns in general statements
∅ Cats are cute. ∅ Water is essential.
Key tip: Use a/an only with singular countable nouns.
Common Uncountable Nouns
- ✅ Never plural: advice, information, furniture, luggage, bread, rice, music, homework
- ✅ Use some, any, much, a lot of instead of many
- ✅ Use a piece of to make them countable:
a piece of advice, an item of furniture
