What Is an Adjective?
- An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun.
- Adjectives tell us what something looks like, feels like, tastes like, or sounds like.
- They help give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea.
What Do Adjectives Describe?
- Color: red, blue, green
- Size: big, small, tiny
- Shape: round, square, flat
- Opinion: beautiful, boring, nice
- Age: old, young, new
- Material: wooden, plastic, metal
- Origin: Spanish, American, Chinese
Adjective Rules & Placement
Where Do Adjectives Go in a Sentence?
- Usually, adjectives come before the noun: a small dog, a happy child
- Sometimes, adjectives come after the verb “to be”: The dog is small. The child is happy.
Using More Than One Adjective
- You can put two or more adjectives together.
- Order matters. Usually: Opinion + Size + Age + Color + Origin + Material + Noun
- Example: a beautiful big old white Spanish house
Adjectives After “To Be”
- When you describe something using be (am, is, are): The soup is hot. The movie is interesting.
