Use adverbs to give more information about verbs (how, when, where), adjectives, or other adverbs. Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. Change -y to -i before adding -ly. Some adverbs are irregular.

Adverbs of manner answer the question โ€œHow?โ€. They usually come after the verb or at the end of the sentence. Common examples: quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly, quietly, well, badly, fast, hard.

Form: most end in -ly ยท Irregular: well, fast, hard

How often something happens

Adverbs of frequency tell us how often an action happens: always (100%), usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never (0%). They usually go before the main verb but after the verb โ€œto beโ€.

Position: I always goโ€ฆ / She is never late.
Frequency Meaning Example
always 100% "I always drink coffee."
usually / often ~70-90% "She often reads books."
sometimes ~40% "We sometimes go to the cinema."
never 0% "He never forgets his keys."
I always brush my teeth at night.

5.4 Adverbs of Time and Place

When and where the action happens

Adverbs of time answer โ€œWhen?โ€ (yesterday, today, tomorrow, now, soon, late, early). Adverbs of place answer โ€œWhere?โ€ (here, there, everywhere, inside, outside, nearby). They usually go at the beginning or end of the sentence.

Time: yesterday / tomorrow
Place: here / there
soon / early / late
inside / outside
We went to the beach yesterday.
Time adverb at the end.
The meeting starts tomorrow morning.

5.5 Adverbs of Degree and Position in Sentences

Adverbs of degree show โ€œhow muchโ€ or โ€œto what extentโ€: very, quite, too, really, a bit, a lot. Too = more than necessary. Position rules: manner after verb, frequency before main verb, time/place at beginning or end. Common mistake: Do not put the adverb between the verb and its object.
