5.1 What are Adverbs? Formation Rules
Use adverbs to give more information about verbs (how, when, where), adjectives, or other adverbs. Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. Change -y to -i before adding -ly. Some adverbs are irregular.
Form: adjective + -ly โ e.g. "quick" โ "quickly" ยท "happy" โ "happily" ยท Irregular: good โ well, fast โ fast| Use | Signal Words | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Manner (how) | quickly, slowly | "She runs quickly." |
| Frequency (how often) | always, often | "I always eat breakfast." |
| Time (when) | yesterday, soon | "We arrived yesterday." |
| Place (where) | here, outside | "The cat is here." |
5.2 Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner answer the question โHow?โ. They usually come after the verb or at the end of the sentence. Common examples: quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly, quietly, well, badly, fast, hard.
Form: most end in -ly ยท Irregular: well, fast, hard5.3 Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of frequency tell us how often an action happens: always (100%), usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never (0%). They usually go before the main verb but after the verb โto beโ.
Position: I always goโฆ / She is never late.| Frequency | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| always | 100% | "I always drink coffee." |
| usually / often | ~70-90% | "She often reads books." |
| sometimes | ~40% | "We sometimes go to the cinema." |
| never | 0% | "He never forgets his keys." |
5.4 Adverbs of Time and Place
Adverbs of time answer โWhen?โ (yesterday, today, tomorrow, now, soon, late, early). Adverbs of place answer โWhere?โ (here, there, everywhere, inside, outside, nearby). They usually go at the beginning or end of the sentence.
5.5 Adverbs of Degree and Position in Sentences
Adverbs of degree show โhow muchโ or โto what extentโ: very, quite, too, really, a bit, a lot. Too = more than necessary. Position rules: manner after verb, frequency before main verb, time/place at beginning or end. Common mistake: Do not put the adverb between the verb and its object.
