Listen - Read & Understand - How Earthquakes Happen - Ex 928

Earthquakes are one of the most powerful natural events in the world. Tectonic plates produce them by moving and suddenly slipping along faults in the Earth's crust. A single earthquake can release energy equivalent to thousands of atomic bombs in a matter of seconds.

Earthquakes never go unnoticed by scientists. Seismologists have found evidence of earthquakes more than three thousand years old in geological records, and they were still able to analyze their power! This is possible because tectonic plates are always moving and storing energy until it is released.

There are more than three hundred active fault lines in the world. Their strength and effects change depending on the type of plate movement. Shallow earthquakes generally cause more destruction than deep earthquakes. Today, earthquakes are studied in science, monitored with advanced technology, and prepared for with emergency plans all around the world.
