Days of the Week

Los Días de la Semana

Days are not capitalized in Spanish. The week starts on lunes. Use el lunes for "on Monday" and los lunes for "every Monday."

Seasons & Ordinal Numbers

Las Estaciones y los Números Ordinales

Seasons: la primavera (spring) · el verano (summer) · el otoño (autumn/fall) · el invierno (winter)

Ordinal Numbers 1st–10th: primero/a · segundo/a · tercero/a · cuarto/a · quinto/a · sexto/a · séptimo/a · octavo/a · noveno/a · décimo/a

Ordinals agree in gender with the noun: el primer día (the first day) · la primera semana (the first week).

Primero and tercero shorten to primer and tercer before a masculine singular noun.

Watch Out!

Common Errors — Don't Make Them!

DON'T say: Es las ocho. → Correct: Son las ocho. (plural hours use son)

DON'T say: Hoy es Lunes. → Correct: Hoy es lunes. (days are not capitalized)

DON'T say: el primero hombre. → Correct: el primer hombre. (primero shortens before masculine singular nouns)

DON'T say: Tengo veinte y dos años. → Correct: Tengo veintidós años. (21–29 are one word)

La familia Mendoza tiene una rutina muy organizada. El señor Mendoza se levanta a las seis y media de la mañana de lunes a viernes. Su esposa prefiere levantarse a las siete y cuarto. Tienen tres hijos: el primero tiene dieciséis años, la segunda tiene doce y el tercero tiene ocho.

Cada martes y jueves, los niños tienen clase de música a las cuatro de la tarde. Los sábados, toda la familia va al mercado a las nueve de la mañana. En diciembre, celebran las posadas durante nueve noches. Su mes favorito es mayo porque el clima es perfecto — ni el frío del invierno ni el calor del verano.

Este año, el quinto aniversario de bodas de los señores Mendoza cae en viernes, el veintidós de marzo. Planean cenar a las ocho y media de la noche en su restaurante favorito. Su hijo mayor ya lleva cuarenta días practicando un discurso para el brindis. La familia sabe que el tiempo pasa rápido — en otoño el pequeño entra al tercer grado y ya tendrá nueve años.
The Mendoza family has a very organized routine. Mr. Mendoza gets up at six thirty in the morning from Monday to Friday. His wife prefers to get up at seven fifteen. They have three children: the first is sixteen years old, the second is twelve, and the third is eight.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, the kids have music class at four in the afternoon. On Saturdays, the whole family goes to the market at nine in the morning. In December, they celebrate the posadas for nine nights. Their favorite month is May because the weather is perfect — neither the cold of winter nor the heat of summer.

This year, the Mendozas' fifth wedding anniversary falls on a Friday, the twenty-second of March. They plan to have dinner at eight thirty in the evening at their favorite restaurant. Their oldest son has already spent forty days practicing a speech for the toast. The family knows time passes quickly — in autumn the little one starts third grade and will already be nine years old.
