In 1853, in an elegant restaurant in Saratoga Springs, in the United States, a cook named George Crum worked in the kitchen. A rich customer complained because the fried potatoes were too thick and he didn't like them at all.
Crum did not give up. At first he got a little annoyed, but then he thought it was interesting to try something different. He cut the potatoes very, very thin like paper and fried them in hot oil until they were crispy and golden.
When the customer tried them, he was very happy. "This is perfect! The best potatoes I have ever eaten in my life!" he said loudly. The other customers in the restaurant also wanted to try them and asked for more.
The idea became very popular very quickly. Soon they started selling the thin fried potatoes in bags and called them "Saratoga Chips". Over time they became everyone's favorite snack.
Now, people eat potato chips everywhere – in offices, at home, at school and at parties. A little funny mistake changed the world of snacks forever!
