1 — What Is an Adverb?

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs

EnglishAn adverb is a word that gives more information about a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs answer questions like: How? When? Where? How often? How much? They make sentences more precise and expressive.
EspañolUn adverbio es una palabra que da más información sobre un verbo, un adjetivo u otro adverbio. Los adverbios responden preguntas como: ¿Cómo? ¿Cuándo? ¿Dónde? ¿Con qué frecuencia? ¿Cuánto? Hacen las oraciones más precisas y expresivas.

2 — Adverbs of Manner

How something is done — usually formed with -ly

EnglishAdverbs of manner describe how an action is performed. Most are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. They usually go after the verb or after the object. They answer: "How does he/she do it?"
EspañolLos adverbios de modo describen cómo se realiza una acción. La mayoría se forman añadiendo -ly a un adjetivo. Generalmente van después del verbo o después del objeto. Responden: "¿Cómo lo hace?"

⚠ "hard" and "fast" are BOTH adjective AND adverb — no -ly form! "hardly" and "fastly" do NOT exist for these meanings.

EnglishAdverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. They go before the main verb but after "be". Some (sometimes, usually, often) can also start a sentence.

My neighbor Sofia is a very organized person. She wakes up early every morning and always makes a list of things to do. She works extremely hard and rarely takes a day off.

Last Saturday, Sofia decided to clean her apartment thoroughly. She moved quickly from room to room and carefully organized everything. Afterward, she sat quietly on her balcony and read a book. She usually reads for an hour, but that day she read for quite a long time.

In the evening, a friend called and asked if Sofia wanted to go out. "I am already tired," she said softly, "but I will come soon." She got ready fast, left the apartment, and walked happily down the street to meet her friend. It was a really lovely evening.
