Section 9.2 — Mine: El mío / La mía

Talking About What Is Mine — Without Repeating the Noun

Possessive pronouns replace a noun. They must match the gender (m/f) and number (sing/pl) of the object they replace. They are almost always used with a definite article: el, la, los, las.

¿Es este su bolígrafo? — No, el mío es azul.	Is this your pen? — No, mine is blue.	el mío = masculine singular
Mi oficina es pequeña, pero la mía tiene ventana.	My office is small, but mine has a window.	la mía = feminine singular
Sus documentos están aquí, y los míos están en el escritorio.	Your documents are here, and mine are on the desk.	los míos = masculine plural
¿Dónde están las mías?	Where are mine?	las mías = feminine plural
Usted tiene su café y yo tengo el mío.	You have your coffee and I have mine.	el mío replaces "café" (m.)

El suyo — Very Versatile, Like the Adjective Su

Suyo/suya covers yours (formal), his, hers, and theirs. Context makes the owner clear.

Section 9.2 — Ours: El nuestro / La nuestra

Nuestro — Changes for Gender AND Number

el nuestro	Masculine singular noun	Su equipo es eficiente, y el nuestro también.	Their team is efficient and ours too.
la nuestra	Feminine singular noun	Sus ideas son buenas, y las nuestras son prácticas.	Their ideas are good and ours are practical.
los nuestros	Masculine plural noun	Sus proyectos son largos, pero los nuestros son cortos.	Their projects are long but ours are short.
la nuestra	Feminine singular noun	Usted ayuda a su comunidad y nosotros a la nuestra.	You help your community and we help ours.

Section 9.2 — Pronouns After Ser & Avoiding Confusion

Using Possessive Pronouns After Ser + Clarifying with De

After the verb ser, you can often drop the article (el/la). To avoid confusion with suyo, add a de phrase.

Section 9.3 — Basic Ownership with De

The "De" Structure: Object + de + Owner

To show possession for names and titles, use: [object] + de + [owner]. The object always comes first — unlike English.

Es el reporte de la jefa.	It is the report of the boss.	It is the boss's report.
El escritorio de Juan está en la esquina.	The desk of Juan is in the corner.	Juan's desk is in the corner.
Yo busco las llaves de María.	I look for the keys of María.	I look for María's keys.
Usted lee el documento de la empresa.	You read the document of the company.	You read the company's document.

Section 9.3 — The Contraction Del (de + el)

Del = De + El — Mandatory in Spanish

When de is followed by the masculine article el, they must contract to del. This does NOT happen with la, los, or las.

Usted está en la oficina del gerente.	You are in the manager's office.	la oficina de la doctora ✓
El horario del hospital es flexible.	The hospital's schedule is flexible.	el horario de los estudiantes ✓

⚠ Never say "de el" — always use "del"! WRONG: La oficina de el gerente. ✗
CORRECT: La oficina del gerente. ✓

But: La oficina de la gerente. ✓ (no contraction with la)

Sofía y Daniela son compañeras de trabajo en una oficina del centro de la ciudad. Hoy es lunes y las dos buscan sus cosas. Sofía dice: "¿Es este tu bolígrafo?" Daniela responde: "No, el mío es azul. Ese es el tuyo." Sofía sonríe: "Tienes razón, este es el mío."

En la reunión, el gerente pregunta: "¿Están listos los reportes?" Sofía responde: "El mío está listo." Daniela agrega: "Y el mío también." El gerente dice: "Perfecto. Los proyectos de los clientes son urgentes. El proyecto del señor Ramírez necesita atención hoy."

Grammar Notes — Possessive Pronouns & De in the Story:

🔵 el mío / la mía → replace a specific noun and agree in gender with it. "El mío es azul" — el mío replaces bolígrafo (masculine).

🟢 el tuyo / la tuya → "yours" (informal). Used in conversation between colleagues: "ese es el tuyo."

🟣 del → mandatory contraction of de + el. "La oficina del centro" (de + el centro). Never "de el."

🔴 de los / de la / de los → de does NOT contract with la, los, or las: "los proyectos de los clientes," "el mapa de la directora."

🟡 la nuestra / el nuestro → Ours. Must agree in gender with the noun it replaces: "La responsabilidad es nuestra" / "El éxito será el nuestro."

🟤 de usted / de ella → Used to clarify ambiguous "su/suyo." "La decisión es de usted" = The decision is yours.
