Use the when both speaker and listener know exactly which thing is meant — because it is unique, already mentioned, or the only one in context.

| Only one in context | Can you close the window? / Ask the manager. |
| Superlatives | She is the best student in the class. |
| Ordinals | He finished on the first day. / Read the third chapter. |
Use a or an when introducing something for the first time, or referring to one of many. The choice depends on the sound of the following word.

Use no article (zero article) for general truths about uncountable or plural nouns, and with many fixed expressions.

Countable nouns have singular and plural forms and can use a/an. Uncountable nouns have no plural and cannot use a/an.
